SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team picked up a pair of much needed victories on Friday against Lone Star Conference rival Cameron University, 12-0 and 6-4 at Sullivan Field. (
Game 1,
Game 2)
In the first game, the Cardinals (18-11, 4-6) scored three runs in each of the first three innings en route to an easy victory. The only drama was whether or not UIW starting pitcher
Dylan Boss (Boerne/Boerne HS) would be able to toss a no hitter. Boss took a no-no into the fifth inning, but Keaton Green ended his bid with outs. Boss went 6.0 innings allowing two hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Will Gonzalez (Helotes/O'Connor HS) closed out the game with a shutout inning of relief.
The Cardinals pounded out 13 hits in the game, including three by
Thomas Rinn (Cameron/Yoe HS) who was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI's and a walk. The catching duo of
Zac Russell (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) and
Hestand Foster (Waxahachie/Waxahachie HS) combined to go 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBI's. Russell crushed a mammoth three-run homer in the third inning, his third of the season. Leadoff man
Derrick Walls (San Antonio/Reagan HS) was hitless, but he walked three times, scored twice and stole a base.
Brent Hendy was tagged with the loss for the Aggies (8-18, 2-8). He lasted 2.1 innings giving up five hits, six walks and seven earned runs.
In the second game, the Aggies finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Brad Blumer's two-out triple drove in Thomas Galvin to give them a short-lived lead.
The Cardinals responded with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Walls walked, stole second and third and scored on
John Zule's (San Antonio/Stevens HS) single.
Adam Pena (Mission/Sharyland HS) added an RBI double later in the inning and scored the fourth and final run.
The score remained 4-1 Cardinals until the top of the fifth inning. Tyler Cox reached base via hit by pitch to start the inning and eventually came around to score on Kaz Sanders' single. The Cards added two more runs in the sixth inning when
Jordan Scelfo (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe HS) led off with a double and scored on Walls' first home run of the season.
Over the final two innings, the Aggies made it close with a pair of solo home runs by Green in the eighth inning and Nick Smith in the ninth inning.
Joe Mills (Allen/Allen HS) pitched the final three innings of the game for the Cards to pick up the save and was able to induce a game-ending double play to secure the win.
Jesus Berduzco (Sacramento, CA/Foothill HS) pitched 6.0 strong innings to earn the win for the Cards. He allowed six hits, one walk and two runs while striking out seven. UIW finished with 11 hits in the game, including two more for Russell who cracked his first triple of the year. Walls had a big game going 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI's, three stolen bases and a homer.
Smith led the Aggies offense going 3-for-4 with a homer and a stolen base. Brandon Raidy also had two hits in the game. Brian Schwabe took the loss after allowing 10 hits, six walks and five earned runs in 6.0 innings.
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at Sullivan Field.
