Cardinals Host Angelo State

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team welcomes Lone Star Conference rival Angelo State to Sullivan Field this weekend for a four game series.  The series begins with one game on Friday at 6 p.m., continues with a doubleheader on Saturday at 3 p.m. and concludes with one game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Cardinals (15-8, 1-3) enter the weekend on a three-game losing streak, their longest of the season, but are still ranked #6 in the NCBWA South Central Region Poll.  All three losses were by one run.  The team is hitting .318 as a team and have three regulars hitting at least .394 on the season.  Adam Pena (Mission/Sharyland HS) leads the team with a .413 batting average and has driven in 16 runs.  Shortstop Derrick Walls (San Antonio/Reagan HS) is the offensive catalyst with a conference best 31 runs scored, 23 walks and 19 stolen bases.

The UIW pitching staff has a 3.88 earned run average and two shutouts on the year.  Sophomore Dylan Boss (Boerne/Boerne HS) has been the team's most consistent starter with a 3-2 record and 1.91 ERA.  Junior Alexis Garza (McAllen/McAllen HS) is 3-0 on the season with a 0.93 ERA, but has not pitched since February 26.

The Rams (15-9, 1-3) were picked to win the LSC and are currently #5 in the NCBWA regional poll.  They are hitting .320 as a team and boast the LSC Preseason Player of the Year, Lee Neumann.  He is hitting .379 with 24 runs and 24 RBI's.  The team's top pitcher has been Jake Feckley who is 4-2 with a 2.88 ERA and three saves.

Friday will be UIW International Student's Day with a free tailgate party for all UIW international students.
