The Cardinals jumped out to an early 15-9 lead before the Rams responded with a 9-0 run. UIW bounced back with eight of the next 10 points, but ASU closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 28-25 lead at halftime.
The slow first half pace gave way to a high-scoring second half. The Rams started the second half on a 14-2 run and held a double digit lead the remainder of the game. The lead ballooned to as many as 23 points, but UIW was able to hang within reach thanks to 22 points by
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) in the final 9:16 of the game.
The Cardinals shot 40.7 percent from the field, made 7-of-19 from three-point range and were 24-of-27 at the foul line. Livingston finished with 30 points and three blocks while going a perfect 13-of-13 at the foul line.
Dionelle Rucker (San Antonio/New Life Christian Academy) added 13 points and seven rebounds while
Lyn'Dale Brown (San Antonio/Judson HS) and
Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy-Falls HS) each had 10 points. The team had 33 rebounds and committed 21 turnovers.
The Rams shot 44.2 percent from the field and had six players score in double figures. They went 6-of-22 from three-point range and were 36-of-46 at the foul line. Antonio Dye led the team with 19 points, four assists and three steals. Chris Talkington added 14 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
The Cardinals will take on Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. in the LSC Tournament in Allen, Texas.
