SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - The University of the Incarnate Word men's and women's tennis teams swept McMurry on Sunday afternoon at the Mabry Tennis Center by identical 9-0 scores.
On the men's side, UIW got their second full sweep of the season. The Cardinals had a little bit of competition in doubles play as McMurry was able to win a combined 13 games. The closest match came when
Aiden DeLeon (Corpus Christi/Flour Bluff) and
Leonard Ivic (Split, Croatia/Economic Administration) defeated Chris Breaux and Casjen Rico, 8-6.
In singles action, UIW won all but one match in straight sets. In #3 singles
Mario Jakovljevic (Osijek, Croatia/Davor Hilas) was able to get by Carlos Perez in a third set tie break 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.
Brandon Davis (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) continued his hot streak picking up his fifth straight win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Preston Steblein. Incarnate Word moved to 7-3 on the year with the win.
On the women's side, the Cardinals got their second straight sweep in three days. UIW easily got through their doubles matches heading to singles play with a 3-0 lead. Like the men, they won all of their singles matches in straight sets except for one. At #6 singles,
Jill Simon (Portland/Gregory-Portland) picked up her second straight win with a 2-6, 6-1, 10-6 win over Brandy Curry. The Cardinals moved to 7-6 on the season.
Both Cardinal teams will return to action on Tuesday morning as they host Newman University at 9:00 a.m. at the Mabry Tennis Center.
