Box Score GEORGETOWN, TEXAS – A 16-0 run in the first half allowed visiting University of the Incarnate Word to cruise past Southwestern University on Friday night, 80-61 in men's basketball action.
The Cardinals (5-0) remained perfect on the season with the victory. The key four minutes of the game started with 12 minutes remaining in the first half and the Cardinals leading 15-14. UIW proceeded to score the next 16 points of the game.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) got the run started with a 3-pointer and it concluded on a
Winslo Barry (Nassau, Bahamas) layup with 8:20 left in the first half. Following the run, the Cardinals continued to hold a double digit lead for the remainder of the game.
The Pirates (2-2) closed the gap a little at the half and trailed 39-27. However, the Cardinals quickly pushed the lead up to 20 points and Southwestern never seriously threatened in the second half.
The Cardinals shot 51.0 percent from the field, made 6-of-13 from three-point range and were 24-of-31 at the foul line.
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) led the team with 21 points while going 8-for-10 from the foul line and knocking down three three-pointers. Hittle finished the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Justin Philippe (Linden, NJ/Navarro JC) had his best game of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds. They also pulled down 16 more rebounds than the Pirates.
The Pirates shot 30.6 percent from the field, made 5-of-23 from the three-point line and 18-of-23 from the foul line. Jake Schifani led the team with 15 points off the bench. Sean Myers, Adrian Johnson and Michael Cantu each scored 10 points apiece. They forced 18 turnovers while committing only nine.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday night at North Texas for a 7:30 p.m. start.
