Cardinals Hit Century Mark

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – For the first time in nearly a year, the University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team hit triple digits on the scoreboard.  They won going away against visiting Lone Star Conference foe Angelo State on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center, 100-83. (Box Score)

The streaking Cardinals (10-6, 6-2) won their sixth consecutive home game and shot over 50 percent from the field for the fifth straight game at home.  UIW started the game a little slow, but quickly picked up the pace as they knocked down seven three-pointers in the first half.  They led by as many as 18 points in the period, but the Rams (5-11, 2-6) were able to close the gap to 52-40 at halftime.

The second half was more of the same for the Cardinals.  They had an answer for every Angelo State bucket and were never threatened.  Andre Corley (Baytown/Baytown HS) hit a three-pointer with 1:29 remaining in the game to give the Cardinals 100 points for the first time since Feb. 12, 2012 when they won 117-73 over Ecclesia College.

The Cardinals shot 56.7 percent from the field, made 11-of-25 from three-point range and were even 21-of-25 at the charity stripe.  Corley led the team with 21 points and four rebounds on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and a 6-for-7 performance at the foul line.  Anthony Horton (League City/Clear Springs HS) came off the bench for only the second time this year, but responded with 20 points in 20 minutes of action as he hit a trio of three-pointers and was a perfect 5-for-5 at the foul line.

Senior forward Dionelle Rucker (San Antonio/New Life Christian Academy) was stellar as usual with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists for UIW.  Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) contributed 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting while Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) scored all 11 of his points in the second half.  Point guards Lyn'Dale Brown (San Antonio/Judson HS) and Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy-Falls HS) combined for 16 points, nine assists and nine rebounds.

The Rams shot 47.5 percent from the field, made 6-of-17 from three-point range and were 19-of-24 at the foul line.  Bryan Hammond had a great game with 26 points, six assists and five rebounds in a losing effort.  Justin Walling added 13 points and four assists off the bench.  They had one more rebound and one more turnover than the Cardinals in the game.

UIW is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
