AUSTIN, TEXAS – Despite a late comeback effort, the Incarnate Word women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Metro State on Sunday playing a neutral site match on the campus of St. Edward's. (
Box Score)
Metro State (3-1) got a fantastic effort from Karisa Price who scored a hat-trick on only four shots. Price put the Roadrunners on the board first when she made a cut back move in the box and fired a shot from 15 yards out past the goalkeeper at 38:24. She added her second goal early in the second half when Tess Hagenlock crossed a pass that she was able to run down and tap in at 51:42.
The Cardinals (0-2) closed the gap eight minutes later.
Amanda Watkins (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) found a streaking
Jordyn Garcia (Cedar Park/Leander HS) open on a through pass off a free kick. Garcia was able to one-time a shot past MSU goalkeeper Jordan Simkins into the net at 59:28.
It appeared that Price clinched the match with her third goal at 75:38. Hagenlock sent a cross in front of the net and Price connected on a sliding one-timer to score.
The Cardinals continued to fight and made it a 3-2 score when
Amber Guenther (San Antonio/Johnson HS) was on the receiving end of a
Samantha Johnson (Austin/Home School) through pass and she slotted it past the goalkeeper at 87:52. Unfortunately, that was the last shot UIW was able to attempt.
The Cardinals came out the gates attacking well, but were unable to score. They had three chances in the first five minutes and they had attempted six shots in the first 14 minutes of the match, but could not get one past Simkins who earned the victory with three saves.
The Cardinals took 15 shots compared to 13 for the Roadrunners, but Metro State was awarded seven corner kicks and UIW received just four.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday at 7:30 against Abilene Christian in their home opener and Lone Star Conference opener at Benson Field.
