SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – After eight matches on the road, the University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team finally plays their first home match of the year on Friday night at 7 p.m. against Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Commerce at the McDermott Center.
The Cardinals (3-5) are coming off at 3-1 weekend at the Tarleton State Tournament. Senior
Lydia Werchan (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) was named the LSC Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 7.15 digs per set. She also eclipsed 1,000 career digs over the weekend.
The Cardinals are averaging 12.15 kills and 16.42 digs per set for the season. Freshman
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) leads the team with 3.19 kills and 2.38 digs per set. Senior
Chetina Chavis (Houston/Bush HS) is the team's top net defender with 0.65 blocks per set and also leads the team with a .238 attack.
Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian Prep) directs the offense with 6.15 assists per set.
The Lions have gotten off to a flying start this year with a 7-1 record. They boast the top attacking player in the conference in Rachel Robertson. She is averaging 4.03 kills per set along with a .434 attack and 0.86 blocks per set. Setter Jordan Neal is a returning all-conference performer who is dishing out 10.48 assists per set and picks up 2.62 digs per set. The team is averaging 13.59 kills per set and has a .234 attack.
The Cardinals will come right back on Saturday and host Texas Woman's at 2 p.m.
