Incarnate Word's women's track and field team rolled to 55 points at the Lone Star Conference championships and 33.4 of those came in jumping events at the meet conducted in Commerce.
The big score for the Cardinals were at the high jump pit where Jane Vosteen went 1.68 meters to capture the silver medal. That height was her personal best, it tied the UIW school mark, and gave Vosteen a provisional status for the upcoming NCAA Division II national championships.
Not too far below Vosteen were fellow jumpers Zariah Noyola and Marissa Shinsky who both cleared 1.62 meters to create a four-way tie for third. Vosteen received eight team points while Noyola and Shinsky came away with 4.5 each.
Stephanie Nelson went to the long jump pit and recorded a leap of 5.87 meters for a fifth place finish and another four UIW points. That effort put her on the NCAA provisional list.
Then, in the triple jump, Lilya Piskunova earned 3.6 points with her distance of 10.56 meters which was tied for sixth. In the other jumping event, the pole vault, Brittney Holcombe recorded a point for her team with an effort of 2.76 meters and eighth place.
In the UIW school records department, Alyson Gonzales had to run a long way but she got there faster than any before her. Her time in the 10,000-meter run was 41:1l.59. That was just out of the meet money but goes into the Cardinals' record book.
The one other school mark erased during the LSC competition was in the 4x100 relay where the Cardinals turned in a 46.47. That foursome was Nelson, Shaneve Swift, Holcombe and Lauren Pratt.
Following the LSC affair the Cardinals have six individuals and one relay team awaiting bids for the NCAA meet at the end of May. On May 10 Incarnate Word will host its own “Last Chance” Meet at Benson Stadium. This is a meet where individuals from various schools will compete in efforts to better their times, heights and distances in order to get onto the NCAA's automatic bid list.
