BASEBALL GOES EXTRA INNINGS FOR WIN

Saturday featured a Lone Star Conference doubleheader on the road for the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team against Cameron University, with the teams splitting the double-dip, 7-3 Cameron in game one and 6-3 UIW in game two.

In game one, the Cardinals (10-12 overall, 5-6 LSC) surrendered four runs in the second inning to fall behind, 5-1, and a late rally came up short as two runs in the 7th inning (both of Saturday's games were seven innings long) weren't enough to tie the score and send things into extra innings.

In game two, however, the Cardinals and the Aggies ended the 7th inning with a tie score, 2-2, and it wasn't until the 10th inning that UIW was able to blow the game open with a 4-run burst that Cameron just couldn't answer.

Things started off with a single by Adam Pena and then Travis Fuquay (pinch-running for Pena) was then advanced to second base thanks to a bunt by Jordan Littlefield and scored when Slade Brown hit a single to left field.

After a groundout that advanced Brown to third, Jason Stone hit a single to center field that score Brown to make the score 4-2 with just one out against UIW. Wilson Reuter added another Cardinal on to the bases when he reached (and advanced to third) courtesy of an error by the right fielder – also allowing Stone to score (5-2). Finally, Zac Russell hit a double to left field, scoring Rueter – which was the last run for Incarnate Word.

Cameron managed to score a run in the bottom of the 10th, but nothing else.

The two teams wrap up the LSC weekend series on Sunday in a 9-inning game set to start at 1 p.m.
