The Incarnate Word baseball team bounced back from early trouble against Cameron University on Friday, getting a 5-2 win against the Aggies in game one of the four-game, weekend series in Oklahoma.
UIW (9-11 overall, 4-5 in the Lone Star Conference) fell behind 2-0 after the first three innings courtesy of things like a wild pitch and an infield error, but the Cardinals responded in the 5th inning.
Things didn't look to be going well for UIW in the top of the inning as the first two batters were out without much fuss. But, Travis Fuquay lined a single into center field and then Zac Russell put a single-base hit into left field. After that, Derrick Walls drew a walk and the bases were loaded for senior Hector Flores – who put a pitch into right field for an RBI-single to score Fuquay.
The bases still loaded, Adam Pena also drew a walk to bring home Russell to tie the game, 2-2, and keep the bases loaded for a wild pitch by the Cameron pitcher to allow Walls to use his speed and score the go-ahead run, 3-2.
Incarnate Word added insurance runs in the 6th and 8th innings – with Jason Stone hitting an RBI single that scored Slade Brown (who was on second with a lead-off double) in the 6th; and Jordan Littlefield (who reached on an error) coming home courtesy of a Lucas Miller single to center field.
On the mound, Dylan Boss took over in fourth inning and stayed in the rest of the way for a 6-inning relief performance that had 10 strikeouts, only one hit and no runs against in 20 batters faced. His record improves to 1-2 on the season as a started.
Now, the Cardinals will face off against the Aggies on Saturday and Sunday for the three remaining LSC games in Lawton, Oklahoma. Saturday's doubleheader of two, 7-inning games is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.; Sunday's series-finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch as well.
