The Lone Star Conference will not officially sponsor indoor track and field until the 2012-2013 schoolyear but that didn't keep the league from throwing a party last weekend in Lubbock which produced some surprises.
In national rankings the LSC has some big time teams as Angelo State and Abilene Christian are rated 16th and 18th respectively in Division II. Both of those squads got surprised when West Texas A&M won the team title. And they might have been looking over their collective shoulders as Incarnate Word finished fourth and not all that far behind in points.
Final standings were West Texas (140), Angelo State (114), Abilene Christian (112), and Incarnate Word (95).
In addition to those two winning performances the Cardinals left marks all over the school record book. The new marks were:
55-meters 7.24 (prelim Brittney Holcombe
400-meters 57.32 Shaneve Swift
800-meters 2:25.24 Irma Garza
4x400 Relay 3:56.64 (Zariah Noyola, Holcombe, Lawanda Sanders, Swift)
Distance Medley Relay 12:59.88 (Emma Jewell, Noyola, Garza, Amanda Bishop)
High Jump 1.71 meters Marissa Shinsky
Triple Jump 10.46 meters Lilya Piskunova
Pentathlon 2,785 points Lilya Piskunova
Of particular note for the record book was the mark by Garza in the 800. One of the oldest records on file was back in February of 2008 when Yvonne Rodriguez covered that distance in 2:25.43.
Other than any qualifiers for the national indoor meet the Cardinals now turn their attentions to the outdoor schedule which begins March 3 with their own UIW Invitational at Benson Stadium.
