CARDINALS LOOK TO SNAP SKID

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word football team welcomes Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Commerce to town on Saturday evening without kickoff slated for 7 p.m. at Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals (1-4, 0-3) are hoping to end a four-game losing streak against the Lions (1-3, 1-1) who are coming off an exciting 21-14 overtime victory against Texas A&M-Kingsville last week.  UIW is still looking for their first conference win of the season and hope to continue their success against the Lions.

The Cardinals have won both previous meeting with A&M-Commerce by one point apiece.  Last year, the Cardinals jumped out to a 20-0 lead after 20 minutes, but needed a 23-yard field goal from Thomas Rebold with 1:20 remaining in the game to pull out a 23-22 victory on Commerce.  Two years ago, Trent Rios (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) ran for a school-record 207 yards on the final day of the season and Paden Lynch scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 7:22 remaining in the game to give the Cardinals a 17-16 win.

The game figures to be low scoring as both teams are averaging less than 15 points per game on offense and they are they possess the #1 and #2 passing defenses in the league.

The Cardinals will likely rely upon their running game.  Seniors Rios and Marcus Wright (San Antonio/Reagan HS) and freshman Joseph Sadler (Devine/Devine HS) will each see a lot of action.  Quarterback Zach Rhodes (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) also has a 100-yard rushing game on the season.  Rhodes is averaging 152.2 passing yards per game.  His favorite target is tight end Andrew Mocio (Waco/Reicher Catholic HS) who has 17 catches on the year.

The Lions are led by quarterback Deric Davis.  He is averaging 164 yards passing per game while tossing six touchdowns against four interceptions.  Tyler Rawlings and Garrett Smith have combined for 31 catches and 368 yards receiving.  Jamar Mosley is the team's leading rusher.

The game will be webcast online at www.foxsportssouthwest.com.  The radio broadcast is on KKYX 680 AM.
