LAWTON, OKLAHOMA – The University of the Incarnate Word men's cross country team picked up a sixth place finish at the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships hosted by Cameron University on Saturday. (

Eastern New Mexico won the conference title for a second straight year with a total of 37 points. West Texas A&M was second with 75 points and they were followed by Tarleton State (81), Texas A&M-Commerce (102), Angelo State (105), UIW (160), Abilene Christian (165), Cameron (181) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (259).
“Our top five men all set seasonal personal records and four out of the five set lifetime bests,” said UIW head coach Derek Reidel.
The Cardinals finished with the closest pack of any of the teams in the conference with just 32 seconds separating their top finisher from their fifth finisher. Ultimately, the team was hurt by an inability to have anyone finish in the top 20.
Sophomore
Marcos Mora (Converse/Wagner HS) led the Cardinals with a 25
th place finish. He covered the 5.1 mile course in a time of 26:33. Two places behind him was
Caleb Gutierrez (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) in a time of 26:45.
Sebastian Benavides (Lytle/Lytle HS) took 33
rd in a time of 26:52 while Alex Hernandez (Converse/Wagner HS) was 36
th in 26:59 and
Javier Salas (San Antonio/East Central HS) was 39
th in 27:05.
Eastern New Mexico had all five of their scoring runners earn all-conference honors by finishing in the top 15. Isaiah Samoei won the individual title for a second straight year in a time of 24:43. West Texas A&M's Dylan Doss was second in 25:11 while Tarleton State's Tye Doty was third in 25:25.
The Cardinals head to the South Central Region Championships on November 3 in Denver, CO next.
