SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word football team returns to Benson Stadium on Saturday night at 7 p.m. for a non-conference game against McMurry University.
The Cardinals (2-5) lost last week's game at Texas A&M-Kingsville by a 20-17 margin and are looking to get back on the winning track against the War Hawks (3-3). This is the first-ever meeting between the two teams and is the first of three home games in the last four weeks of the season for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals rely upon a strong defense that will attempt to slow down the McMurry passing offense that averaged over 360 yards per game through the air. The Cards are ranked 17
th in the nation in pass defense giving up just 168 yards per game. Last week, the Cardinals picked off a pair of passes, including
Juan Asencio's (Pflugerville/Hendrickson HS) 86-yard touchdown return. The War Hawks struggle to protect the quarterback and give up 5.3 sacks per game while the Cardinals are averaging 2.4 sacks per game.
The Cardinal offense will look to freshman
Joseph Sadler (Devine/Devine HS) and senior
Marcus Wright (San Antonio/Reagan HS) to carry the load this week with
Trent Rios (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) likely out with an injury. Freshman quarterback
Taylor Woods (Fort Bend/Austin HS) figures to get his second start of the season after a strong performance against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The game will be broadcast on the radio at 680 AM KKYX and online at
www.kuiw.org and the game will be webcast online at
