CARDINALS SQUEAK BY TEXAS WOMAN'S IN 3-2 WIN

Freshman outside hitter Kelci Lind led UIW in kills against the Pioneers with 15.

(25-17, 25-12, 18-25, 14-25, 15-13)

 

After pulling ahead of the Pioneers 2-0, the Cardinals dropped two sets in a row and let Texas Woman's take it to five.  Even then, after such a solid performance in sets one and two, UIW squeaked by in set five with a 15-13 win.

 

Freshman outside hitter Kelci Lind led the Cardinals in kills with 15. Senior outside hitter Chelsea Grayson had 14 kills in the afternoon match.  Senior middle blocker Anna Herr and senior middle blocker Daniella Vidaurri were active at the net with seven and six blocks respectively.  Herr had four solo blocks and Vidaurri had five.  Vidaurri also ended the five set match with nine kills.  Sophomore setter Danielle Suarez was the front runner in assists for the Cardinals with 33. 

 

While she is normally recognized for the number of kills she gets in a match, sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth Soukup led UIW in digs with 19.

 

The Cardinals had a whooping 16 total team blocks and maintained an attacking percentage of 0.122.

 

Leading the Pioneer's offense was junior right side, Viktorija Jablonska.  Jablonska ended the match with 20 of the team's 47 kills.  Helping her lead Texas Woman's to back to back wins in sets three and four was freshman setter Hannah Marshall.  Marshall was the only setter in the game for the pioneers and obtained 44 assists. 

 

Morgan Wilson, freshman libero, les d the Pioneers in digs with 29 and sophomore middle blocker Chloe Tate had six blocks – three solo and three block assists.  

 

The Cardinals will play at Texas A&M International on Monday, Sept. 26 in a non-conference match up. UIW will resume conference play at home against Texas A&M Kingsville on Oct. 4.  Both games will start at 7 p.m.
