After dropping their first home and conference game in a heart breaking five set match to the Angelo State Belles, the Cardinals travelled to Canyon to play in the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Invitational.
INCARNATE WORD 3, NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS 1
(27-25, 18-25, 26-24, 25-21)
The Cardinals started the tournament by delivering New Mexico Highlands (3-1) their first loss of the season. Both senior setter Sarah Nordman and sophomore setter Danielle Suarez had 22 assists and, as a team, UIW had a well to do 57 kills. 14 of those kills belonged to junior outside hitter Stephanie Bonura.
New Mexico Highlands didn't go down without a fight. Sophomore outside hitter Darian Mullen kept the Cowgirls going with 17 kills and freshman defensive specialist Sheila Olaechea kept the game close with 25 digs.
WEST TEXAS A&M 3, INCARANTE WORD 0
(25-19, 25-10, 25-13)
After an exciting four sets, the Cardinals took on the Lady Buffs of West Texas. The Lady Buffs swept the Cardinals, extending their NCAA record winning streak to 85 games.
The Cardinals found it tough to compete with West Texas with only 21 kills over the three sets and 36 digs. The Cardinals had an overall hitting percentage of .029 compared to the Lady Buffs' .333.
Junior setter Lacy Hayes finished the match with an outstanding 42 assists for West Texas and Stormi Lancaster, junior outside hitter, connected with some of those for 13 kills. Junior outside hitter Sarah Martin was following close behind Lancaster with 12 kills.
Saturday, Sept. 10 have the Cardinals taking on Oklahoma Panhandle at 9:30 a.m. and Eastern New Mexico at 7:00 p.m.
