Cardinal senior pitcher Elroy Urbina was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Major League Baseball draft, making him the second player in Incarnate Word history to be drafted.
Urbina, a 6-1 lefty who spent the 2011 season as the Cardinals' closer, was selected 1114th overall.
A transfer from Angelina Junior College with his brother, Leroy (an infielder), Elroy spent time as a starting pitcher and a relief pitcher in the 2010 season, but really flourished as UIW's closer in the 2011 campaign – earning 13 saves (most, all-time for a UIW pitcher in a season) and appearing in 33 games (most, all-time for a UIW pitcher in a season). His 13 career saves are also second-most in a for a Cardinal pitcher.
Urbina finished the 2011 season with a team-leading 2.74 ERA (fifth-best in UIW history) in 49.1 innings pitched. He was third-best in strikeouts with 56. In his career, he had a 4.30 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 96.2 innings of work.
The other UIW player to be drafted by the MLB was Chris Solis by the Washington Nationals in 2008.
