WACO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell 16-7 on the road to Baylor University tonight. The Cardinals are now 13-12 on the year, while the Bears improved to 13-11.
Baylor scored in the top of the first off, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead.
Following a scoreless first two innings and with two outs in the top of the third,
Jake Weaver kept the inning going with a single to right for the Cardinals. He then scored off of
Colin Cymbalista's two-run shot to tie the game at two. This was his fifth home run of the season.
The game did not stay tied long as the Bears retook the lead off a home run in their half of the third to go back in front, 3-2.
Baylor in the bottom of the fifth plated six runs on six hits and an error to take a 9-2 lead.
Following back-to-back outs in the top of the sixth, UIW's
Tyler Garritano and
Cole Tabor were both hit by pitches. Garritano later scored off
Drake Anderson's single to left to cut the lead to 9-3 before a flyout to center ended the frame.
The Cardinals in the top of the seventh added three runs, with one of them coming off a wild pitch to cut the lead to, 9-6.
Baylor answered right back in its half of the seventh when it plated seven runs on six hits to push its lead to, 16-6.

Preston Newberry to make it 16-7 and send
Enrico Carrion to third with two down. With the Cardinals down to their final out,
Justin Rumfield kept the inning alive following being hit by a pitch. He then took second on defensive indifference to put runners in scoring position, but a strikeout ended the rally and game.
Reliever
Sam Pitts took the loss (0-1) on the mound for UIW. He allowed one run on a hit and a walk in an inning and a third.
Pitchers
Matthew Foley,
Ashton Perkins,
Braelin Pillot, and
Colin Huspen all pitched scoreless innings for the Cardinals.
Newberry and Weaver each tallied a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs. Teammate Cymbalista finished the game going 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored.
Incarnate Word is back on the road this weekend when it travels to Beaumont to face Lamar University in Southland Conference action. Game one is Friday at 7 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
