Incarnate Word's women got two new school marks recently, one in track, one in field, and with the two events being about as disparate as possible.
First up for the Cardinals at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight meet at Rice University was the 4x400 relay team. Finishing fifth the foursome of Vanecia Spencer, Stacy Stanush, Shaneve Swift and Elodie Barre' toured the oval four times in 3:53.18 and that lowered the previous mark of 3:53.98 set the first day of April this spring.
Yelena Evans then went to the throwing ring and tossed the hammer 30.74 meters (100-10 feet) for the second new UIW mark.
The near misses for Incarnate Word were both from Elvira Gonzalez in the hurdles. At the 100-meter distance she finished in 15.28 and that is now third on the UIW all-time list. Then, she went 1:04.22 in the 400-hurdles for the second best time in Cardinals history.
While the list did not increase from the previous NCAA Division II National Championships provisional qualifiers, Lauren Pratt did better herself. In the long jump she covered 5.75 meters which keeps her in the chase for a finals berth.
Next up for the Cardinals are the Lone Star Conference championships May 7 to May 9 in Stephenville. Tarleton State will be the host school.
