UIW BEATS #16 TARLETON, 9-6

Sophomore right fielder Derrick Walls was 3-for-5 with a home run against Tarleton State on Friday. UIW won, 9-6.

The Cardinal baseball team got back into the win column with a 15-hit, 9-6 victory over No. 16 Tarleton State this afternoon in Stephenville, improving UIW's overall record to 4-2 and keeping Incarnate Word unbeaten in Lone Star Conference play with a 4-0 record.

On the mound, UIW junior ace Kirk Jewasko pitched six complete innings, allowing one run and walking three en route to his second win of the season. He struck out seven and allowed six hits in 24 batters faced.

At the plate, Jewasko got help early from his teammates, as the 15 hits by Incarnate Word included two home runs (by Derrick Walls and Mike De la Rosa) and five doubles (one by Matt Flores, two by Daniel Qualls and two by Matt Roohan). Flores and Walls both hit 3-for-5 on the day and Roohan was 3-for-4.

UIW was up 9-1 in the top of the eighth before Tarleton State generated five runs to try to make it interesting. Sophomore Zach Anderson took over for the Cardinals in the 7th and pitched three innings to finish the game.

Incarnate Word and Tarleton will play a doubleheader tomorrow to finish up their 3-game LSC series.
