BACK-AND-FORTH GAME ENDS WITH LOSS

UIW catcher Daniel Qualls went 3-for-5 in Tuesday's loss to St. Mary's University.

It was another classic battle between Incarnate Word and cross-town rival St. Mary's University at Sullivan Field on Tuesday afternoon, the two teams trading offensive surges all the way into the 9th inning until the Rattlers came out on top, 11-8.

UIW (3-2 overall) started the game out with four shutout innings by Matt Hickman who gave up four hits and walked three, but struck out five and left 0s on the scoreboard. At the plate, the Cardinals started their scoring with a 2-run home run by Matt Roohan (first of the year) in the third inning and then adding a third run in the fourth when Daniel Qualls scored on an RBI single by Derrick Walls.

Up 3-0, things fell apart for UIW in the fifth. St. Mary's (5-3 overall) started off with a pair of singles against Mike Farrenkopf and then both runs advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch. Another single brough in a run and then the floodgates opened. In the end, STMU scored eight runs on just 4 hits, but three walks, three wild pitches and two hit batters gave the Rattlers all the help they needed to take the 8-3 lead.

Incarnate Word, however, would battle back, starting with a 3-run homer by second baseman Hector Flores down in the 9th spot of the order. His bomb over the wall was the first of his career at UIW and it breathed life back into UIW, now down only 8-6.

The Cardinals tied the score at 8-8 in the 7th. Steven Vidaurri scored on an RBI single by Qualls and then Brandon Clark's single allowed Brett Bippert (pinch-running for Jackson Woodruff) to reach home, but Qualls was called out at the plate on a throw from left field to the catcher.

With things knotted up, neither team scored until STMU ripped off 3 runs in the top of the ninth, thanks largely in part to a two-run home run that gave the Rattlers the 11-8 advantage. Incarnate Word could do nothing with their last at-bat and the visitors took the game.

Qualls led UIW with a 3-for-5 night at the plate, scoring two runs and getting an RBI. Walls was 2-for-5 with two hits and an RBI. Freshman Brandon Clark was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Hector Flores had a 3 RBI night and scored a run.

The Cardinals travel to Tarleton State this weekend for a Lone Star Conference series starting at 2 p.m. on Friday.
