UIW HANDLED BY LADY BUFFS IN 3

Sarah Cardenas, sophomore setter, led UIW in assists against West Texas A&M with 15.

WEST TEXAS A&M 3, INCARNATE WORD 0
(25-9, 25-23, 25-17)

The Cardinals returned home for a tough match against the 11-1 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M. Scoring a mere nine points in the first set, the Cardinals got off to a rough start.

In the second set, UIW came to life, fighting from behind the entire set and tying it up on three different occasions. In the end, the Cardinals' effort came up short and they fell in the second set, 25-23.

The third set was the first set of the match that the Cardinals earned rights to the first point. Unfortunately, that lead didn't last long. West Texas A&M went ahead 14-7 before the Cardinals could answer again. Much like the second set though, what the Cardinals were giving wasn't enough to take down the Lady Buffs and they lost the set, ending the match in a 3-0 sweep.

Freshman Kelci Lind led the Cardinals in kills with 7. As a team, UIW had a mere 28 kills compared to West Texas A&M's 44. Sophomore setter Sarah Cardenas shared setting duties with sophomore Danielle Suarez and led the Cardinals in assists with 15. Both the Cardinals and the Lady Buffs had a total of 6 team blocks.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Martin saw a lot of the ball tonight and led the Lady Buffs in kills with 16. Usually behind those assists was junior setter Lacy Hayes who ended the night with 37 assists. West Texas A&M maintained a .388 hitting percentage.

The Cardinals take on the Zias of Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. in the McDermott Center.
