WOMEN GET FIRST WIN IN DOUBLE OT

Amber Guenther and Sarah Hernandez scored for the Cardinals in Sunday's victory.

After a disappointing result in Friday's season-opener, the Cardinal women's soccer team took the field against No. 7-rankedColorado School of Mines on Sunday in Colorado, taking the hosts to double overtime for a 2-1 victory.

With the two teams playing to a 0-0 draw at halftime, it wasn't until late in the second half that the scoring opened up. UIW (1-1) got on the board first when freshman Amber Guenther headed a pass from senior Emily Hernandez in the 65th minute for Guenther's first-ever goal at Incarnate Word and a 1-0 Cardinal lead.

Colorado (0-1-1) responded, however, in the 73rd minute with an equalizer and the clock ran out on regulation before either team could score again.

In overtime, the Cardinals and Orediggers both had opportunities in the opening OT period, but after the game went into the second overtime senior Sarah Hernandez made herself known and scored the game-winner in the 106th minute, her second goal of the season.

Up 2-1, Incarnate Word fended off CSM for the remainder of the time left in the period and secured their first win of the season.

UIW will next take the field against Washburn University in Kansas on September 11th at 1 p.m. Incarnate Word plays its home-opener at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium on September 16th at 1 p.m. against University of Texas-Brownsville.
