The Incarnate Word women's soccer team opened the 2010 season on the road against Metro State in Colorado on Friday, losing to the hosts, 3-2, up in Denver.
Seniors Emily and Sarah Hernandez each scored a goal for the Cardinals (0-1).
Emily Hernandez's goal came in the 29th minute of the first half with UIW trailing, as the midfielder took a pass from sophomore Sam Johnson and cracked a shot from nearly 30 yards out to knot the score at 1-1.
MSCD scored just before halftime and took a 2-1 lead into the break and added another tally in the 54th minute for a 3-1 lead.
A few minutes later, however, Sarah Hernandez took a pass from Jordyn Garcia and made things interesting with a one-timer that closed the gap to 3-2.
Incarnate Word, however, was unable to get an equalizer before the final whistle.
The Cardinals next play against Colorado School of Mines on Sunday at noon. UIW will be on the road for its first four games before playing their home-opener on Thursday, September 16th, at 1 p.m. against University of Texas-Brownsville.
