WOMEN END SKID, TIE 3-3 VS UTPB

Kelsie Asher got UIW on the board in the first half against Texas-Permian Basin. Incarnate Word tied the Falcons, 3-3.

An offensive battled happened out in Odessa on Sunday as the Incarnate Word women's soccer team fought with Texas-Permian Basin to a 3-3 tie.

UIW (2-3-2) gave up an own goal in the first half, but responded by taking a 3-2 lead into halftime, getting goals from Kelsie Asher, Cassidy Ballantyne and Sarah Hernandez all in the opening 45 minutes of play.

Asher's goal game in the 21st minute after the UTPB goalkeeper mishandled a high, arching ball into the box that fell to her feet. Asher then dribbled clear of a defender and put UIW on the board, 1-1.

After Permian responded to retake the lead at 2-1, senior defender scored her second goal in as many games, heading in a corner kick from Sam Johnson to tie the score back up at 2-2 in the 26th minute.

UIW took the lead, 3-2, at the 43:30-mark of the first half when freshman Sarah Flores passed to senior Sarah Hernandez, who buried the ball into the left side of the net.

The score remained that way until the 85th minute of the game when UTPB ripped a shot into the upper-right corner of the goal from outside the penalty area to tie things at 3-3.

The squads fought hard through two overtime periods, but neither could get the go-ahead goal. The Cardinals ripped off five shots in extra time, but only hit a crossbar for their efforts.

The UIW women will return home on Friday for a game against Lone Star opponent Southwestern Oklahoma State University at 7 p.m.
