ANOTHER TOUGH LOSS FOR UIW ON THE ROAD

UIW goalkeeper Tori Puentes fought hard to keep UIW in the game against ASU on Friday, but the Cardinals ultimately lost, 2-1.

Hoping to bounce back from a tough loss to St. Edward's University on Wednesday, the UIW women's soccer team suffered another tough road loss, 2-1, to Angelo State University in San Angelo on Friday in the first Lone Star Conference matchup for the Cardinals this season.

Goalkeeper Tori Puentes was called upon early and kept the score at 0-0 early, making two point-blank saves against the Rambelles, but ultimately ASU found a way to get the ball past her for the 2-0 lead in the first half as the storm clouds rolled in.

Down 2-0 in the second, UIW (2-3-1, 0-1) and ASU had to fight through a downpour (something very common for most teams playing in the South Central region as of late) and Incarnate Word was able to get on the scoreboard when senior defender Cassidy Ballantyne was able to put her foot on a loose ball in the Angelo State penalty area and score.

It was her first goal of the season and was unassisted.

The Cardinals will stay on the road until Sunday, when they stop in Odessa to visit old Heartland Conference opponent Texas-Permian Basin at 1 p.m. UIW returns home to Benson Stadium in a week, hosting Southwestern Oklahoma State University of the Lone Star Conference at 7 p.m. on Friday.
