COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT FOR UIW

Goals by Sarah Hernandez (pictured) and Sam Johnson nearly brought UIW back from a two-goal deficit on the road against No. 11-ranked St. Edward's University.

What was shaping up to become a thrilling two-goal comeback victory in the rain against a ranked opponent, instead turned into a tough 3-2 overtime loss for the University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team on Wednesday in Austin against No. 11-ranked St. Edward's University.

Incarnate Word (2-2-1) fell behind 2-0 and had to fight and claw their way back into the contest, starting with a goal by Sarah Hernandez in the 73rd minute, giving the Cardinals some energy and shifting the momentum. Hernandez scored off a header after a ball played into the box was headed over the SEU goalkeeper by Amber Guenther in a collision that knocked both players to the ground and allowed Hernandez to put away the loose ball.

Both teams battled and St. Edward's (6-0-1) found themselves playing down by a player after a red card was issued in the 88th minute, which Incarnate Word took full advantage of.

Sophomore midfielder Sam Johnson netted her first goal of the season in the 88th minute, arching a shot over a wall of St. Edward's players and through the hands of St. Edward's goalie from the red card-foul. The score tied things up at 2-2 and further frustrated the Hilltoppers, who soon had a second player red carded in the 90th minute.

Into overtime, Incarnate Word immediately turned up the pressure and Hernandez fired a shot at the goal that sailed wide within the first minute, which turned out to be UIW's only chance of the extra period.

In the 95th minute, St. Edward's was at the other end and earned a corner kick opportunity – which SEU capitalized on, the crossing kick from the corner getting through the players in the penalty area and bouncing off the hip of a Hilltopper defender who was crashing the net. Game over, 3-2.

St. Edward's is the top-ranked women's soccer team in the South Central region of NCAA Division II.

The contest was the fifth game of the year for UIW – the fourth of which was on the road. Incarnate Word will be on the road for two more games this week – Friday against Angelo State and Sunday against Texas-Permian Basin – before finally returning home to Benson Stadium on October 1st.
