LAYENDECKER'S FIRST GETS UIW THE TIE

UIW goalkeeper Tori Puentes kept Washburn from scoring a second goal with four saves after teammate Sarah Layendecker scored to tie the game at 1-1.

It took 90 minutes and then some on Saturday in Topeka, Kansas, but even after two overtime periods, the University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team ended up with a 1-1 tied against Washburn University.

Neither team scored a goal in the first half, but in a span of less than two minutes, both teams got on the scoreboard, starting with the Lady Blues in the 59th minute.

With 59:46 on the clock and UIW (1-1-1) down, junior Sarah Layendecker scored the first goal of her career in red and black to knot the game at 1-1.

The goal came on the first shot on-goal of Layendecker's career and so far is the only shot she has been credited with in her three years with Incarnate Word. And while it is still early in the season, for now the Albuquerque, New Mexico, native has a perfect 100% shooting and shot-on-goal percentage for her career.

After Layendecker's tally, both teams started putting the goalkeepers under pressure with UIW's Tori Puentes making four saves to preserve her side's chance to win or tie.

The Cardinals will play their first home match of the 2010 season this Thursday with a 1 p.m. game against UT-Brownsville at Benson Stadium.
