CARDINALS FALL TO MSU, 1-0

UIW lost to Midwestern State, 1-0, on Friday night.

The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team had a lot of things going for it Friday night.

It was senior night, and six Cardinals had their accolades and accomplishments announced in front of a large crowd. The Cardinals were also undefeated at home in five contests heading into the matchup against Midwestern State University.

But despite the momentum and the past successes at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium, the Cardinals (8-4-2, 4-2) suffered a 1-0 loss to the Mustangs, the lone goal coming in the 61st minute.

Both goalkeepers faced seven shots on-net in the game, but the one shot that got past (or, rather, over) UIW goalie Toru Puentes was the difference maker.

The Cardinals were scrambling in their penalty area and a shot was blasted into a crowd of players before it careened from one side of the field to the other and on the foot of MSU's Maddie Fraser, who saw that Puentes had come off her line to make a save just moments before and chipped the ball over Puentes and her defense for the 1-0 lead.

MSU is undefeated in Lone Star Conference play at 8-0 (the Mustangs are 13-1 overall on the season).

The Cardinals will play host to Abilene Christian University on Sunday at noon.
