Up against the No. 12-ranked Midwestern State University women's soccer team, University of the Incarnate Word showed the visitors from Wichita Falls and the rest of NCAA's Division II that the Cardinals belong back up in the Top 25 teams in the country – taking the Mustangs into 2 overtimes for a 0-0 tie.
Incarnate Word (7-1-2) recorded 29 shots against MSU (6-0-2) and held the visitors to just nine shots in the entire contest. Midwestern State had four shots on-goal, while UIW had 13 on-net and hit goal-pipe three times.
“It was a great effort by our team,” UIW head coach Tina Patterson said. “I wouldn't change anything we did out there today. The girls came out and go after them.”
Eight of UIW's shots came in the overtime periods – on the other side of the field, Midwestern State didn't manage a single shot on the Cardinals' net. It was a great defensive effort by Incarnate Word, which has had most of the goals scored against come on breakaway chances by their opponents.
Against Midwestern, there were almost no serious threats on the Cardinal net and the only serious chance for the Mustangs was nullified when the MSU player was called for a foul after knocking down a UIW defender.
Incarnate Word will be back at home on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. matchup against Heartland Conference opponent Dallas Baptist. UIW is 2-0 and tied for first place in the Heartland while DBU is 2-1 in the conference and alone in third.
