Senior men’s golfer Austin Wylie (Boerne/Boerne HS) was named the University of the Incarnate Word Student-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday following a vote by the UIW head coaches and sports administration.
Wylie had an exceptional year for the Cardinals on the field and he concluded a brilliant career in the classroom by graduating with a 3.96 GPA while earning a degree in accounting in May. He finished with 33 points in the voting as he edged out Padyn Giebler (football) who had 27 points and Ashley Wayman (swimming) who had 15 points. In order to be eligible for the award a student-athlete must have maintained at least a 3.5 GPA or better, reach their junior or senior year, have attended UIW for one calendar year, made a contribution to their team and their community and they could not be in graduate school.
Wylie was the top golfer on the men’s team with a 73.85 scoring average over 27 competitive rounds, including eight rounds of par or better. He registered four top-10 finishes and five top-15 finishes during the season. He was named to the Texas Wesleyan Invitational and The Classic at The Tribute all-tournament teams. He finished in the top-10 at the Southland Conference Championship and earned third team all-conference and first team all-academic honors. He was a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District VII first team selection. He finished his career with a school record for most competitive rounds played in a Cardinals shirt (105).
Shortly following his season with the Cardinals, Wylie won the Greater San Antonio Match Play Championship at River Crossing Golf Club. Previously, he had lost in the semifinals of the tournament on two occasions.
During his four-year career at UIW, Wylie was named to the Lone Star Conference or Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll four times. He led the team in scoring average in two different seasons and finished in the top 20 in the Southland Conference two times. As a junior, he was the runner up at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championships.
