Eight times during the 2013-2014 basketball season he garnered someone's player of the week recognition and all of those added up to
Denzel Livingston being selected as the University of the Incarnate Word's male athlete of the year.
Â
Candidates for UIW male athlete of the year are those who were deemed the best in competition for a specific seven-day period at some point in the school year. At the end of the year coaches and athletic administrators vote for male athlete of the year.Â
Â
It was a year in which UIW began its transition to Division I and supposedly tougher competition across the board. But that didn't seem to matter to Livingston and his Cardinals teammates as they fought their way to a final 21-6 record, the first time in five years that the team reached the 20-win plateau. The schedule included a variety of opponents including 14 games in the Southland Conference, UIW's new home.
Â
There was little doubt about who was the leader of the Cardinals. For the season there were 23 statistical categories for the team. Livingston led the squad in 12 of those and was second in another eight.
Â
He led with his average of 20.3 points a game which increased to 22.3 in Southland Conference play. His total of 548 points also led and those gave him 1,092 for his three years at UIW jumping him into 12th place on the all-time Incarnate Word scoring list. He is just the 14
th player in history to surpass the 1,000-point mark and if he produces another year like the one just past he could finish as the third all-time leading scorer at UIW.
Â
Continuing with statistics, Livingston scored double figure points in 25 of his 27 games including surpassing the 20-point mark 17 times and the 30-point level three times. His season high 36 points also were a team high for the season and came against Southland opponent Houston Baptist.
Â
Four times he had double figure rebounds and he had double points and double rebounds three times. He led in scoring 18 games, 10 in rebounding, 14 in assists and 21 times in steals. In addition to his high 36 points, his single game bests were 11 rebounds, seven steals and five blocks.
Â
His honors culminated with his selection to the Southland Conference All-Defensive Team and his being voted second team All-Southland Conference. He also was placed on the College Hoops Daily All-Southland squad. He was second team All-Southland by College Sports Madness.
Â
Along the way, College Hoops Daily named him Southland player of the month for November and twice he was that organization's player of the week. Twice he was the Southland Conference player of the week and once he was College Sports Madness conference player of the week. And, five times at UIW he was the male athlete of the week.
Â
Livingston is a 6-4 guard. He hails from Houston's Waltrip High School. He is a business major at UIW with a minor in kinesiology. He will be a senior for the 2014-2015 season when the Cardinals are in their second year of transition to Division I.
