SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell to McNeese, 75–54, Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center. The Cardinals move to 10–12 overall and 8–7 in Southland Conference play following the loss.
UIW shot an efficient 48.8 percent (21-of-43) from the field and 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from three-point range, but turnovers and second-chance opportunities proved costly. McNeese forced 31 Cardinal turnovers, converting them into 35 points, and outscored UIW 40–20 in the paint.
Gwendlyn McGrew led the Cardinals with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including three three-pointers, while Jorja Elliott added 12 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. Destiny Whitaker contributed eight points, and Raimi McCrary chipped in six points and four rebounds.
After trailing 14–11 at the end of the first quarter, UIW kept pace in the second behind strong perimeter shooting from Elliott and McGrew. The Cardinals cut the deficit to three late in the second quarter before McNeese carried a 35–28 advantage into halftime.
UIW battled back in the third, tying the game at 37–37 midway through the period following a transition layup by Londyn Oliphant. However, the Cowgirls responded with timely baskets and took a 47–40 lead into the fourth.
McNeese pulled away in the final quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 28–14 in the period to secure the 75–54 victory.
UIW will look to regroup as it continues Southland Conference play next week.
