SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team dropped a 77–73 decision to New Orleans on Wednesday evening at the McDermott Center.
UIW (10–13, 8–8 SLC) led for more than 31 minutes and built an 11-point advantage in the second quarter, but New Orleans (3–21, 3–13 SLC) used a strong fourth-quarter push to secure the road victory.
Jorja Elliott delivered a game-high 29 points on 10-of-21 shooting, including five three-pointers, while adding seven rebounds and two steals. Madison Cockrell finished with 10 points and four assists, and Raimi McCrary added eight points and seven rebounds. Brynn Lusby and Gwendlyn McGrew each collected 10 rebounds as the Cardinals outrebounded the Privateers 47–42.
UIW opened the contest efficiently from the perimeter, knocking down four three-pointers in the first quarter to take a 22–18 lead. The Cardinals extended their margin to double digits midway through the second period and carried a 36–34 advantage into halftime.
Out of the break, Elliott sparked a third-quarter run with multiple transition baskets, helping UIW push the lead to 54–52 entering the final quarter. However, New Orleans capitalized in the paint and on second-chance opportunities down the stretch. The Privateers recorded 48 points in the paint and 18 second-chance points while also receiving 48 points from their bench.
UIW shot 35.8 percent from the field and 31.0 percent from beyond the arc (9-of-29), converting 16-of-21 at the free-throw line. New Orleans shot 41.1 percent overall and outscored the Cardinals 25–19 in the fourth quarter to close out the four-point win.
UIW will look to respond in its next Southland Conference matchup.
