Cardinals Get Hot From Deep, Down Nicholls at Home

SAN ANTONIO, TX. – The University of Incarnate Word women's basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon, collecting a 72-66 win over Nicholls State University inside the McDermott Center

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals opened the game on a 7-0 run as senior Madison Cockrell had five points across the game's first 3:19 of play.
  • The first quarter lead for UIW grew to a 10-point advantage following a jumper by sophomore Brynn Lusby before Nicholls closed the period with eight unanswered points to cut the deficit to just two points.
  • Nicholls took the lead midway through the second quarter and carried a 32-26 edge into the halftime break.
  • Incarnate Word roared back in the second half, outscoring Nicholls 46-34 across the game's final 20 minutes to secure the victory on its home floor.
NOTES
  • The victory moved UIW to over the .500 mark (9-8) in Southland Conference play and also secured a sweep of the season series with Nicholls.
  • Cockrell and fellow senior Jorja Elliott led all players with 19 points apiece.
  • Cockrell was 12-for-14 at the free throw line, while Elliott was 7-for-9 from the field including 4-for-6 from deep and chipped in seven rebounds.
  • Sophomore Gwendlyn McGrew followed with 13 points of her own and junior Raimi McCrary narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
  • The Cardinals shot 51.2 percent from the floor in the contest and 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from three-point range, while holding Nicholls to a 40.3 shooting slip.
  • Incarnate Word was dominant on the boards, outrebounding the Colonels 37-27 down low.

The Cardinals continue their push toward the postseason on Thursday, Feb. 19, when they travel to Natchitoches, Louisiana for an SLC contest against Northwestern State University.
