Second Half Rally Leads Incarnate Word to Second Straight Victory

Box Score NATCHITOCHES, LA – The University of Incarnate Word women's basketball team won its second straight game on Thursday evening, collecting a 71-65 win over Northwestern State University inside Prather Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Incarnate Word was in control early on, building a seven-point advantage through the game's first three minutes of play.
  • The Demons stormed back to take the lead with 5:27 to go in the first quarter, building a lead as large as five points, 13-8, with 4:04 on the clock.
  • The first quarter ended with the score at 15-15, before Northwestern State opened the second frame on a 12-5 run for a seven-point advantage with just under six minutes to play in the half.
  • Senior Jorja Elliott and sophomore Gwendlyn McGrew hit back-to-back three-pointers for UIW to spark a late rally that ended with the Cardinals ahead 33-30 at the halftime break.
  • Northwestern State kicked off the second half with a 13-4 run over the course of the third quarter's first 3:29 to build a six-point lead.
  • Incarnate Word kept the score close, eventually taking the lead for good on a three-pointer from senior Madison Cockrell that put IUW ahead 52-50 with under a minute to play in the third quarter.
  • The Cardinals never trailed in the fourth quarter, pulling away down the stretch to secure their second win in a row.
NOTES
  • The victory moved UIW to 10- overall in Southland Conference play and also secured a sweep of the season series with Northwestern State. 
  • Incarnate Word has now won 16 straight games in the series with Northwestern State dating back to the 2017-28 season.
  • Cockrell led the team with 21 points in 30 minutes of action, making 5-of-10 shots from the floor and 9-of-11 attempts from the free throw line, for her third 20-point game of the year.
  • Elliott tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double performance and fourth of the season.
  • McGrew registered 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the floor, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range. The total was her second 20-point outing of the 2026 season and her 11th game with multiple three-pointers made.
  • As a team, UIW shot 48 percent (24-for-50) from the floor and 60 percent (9-for-15) from deep, while holding the Demons to a 29.6 percent shooting performance.
