Box Score STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word dropped its first road contest 17-5 in a run-rule loss to Tarleton State University this afternoon. The Cardinals are now 6-3, while the Texans move to 5-3 on the season.
Preston Newberry got things started for the Cardinals in the top of the first when he homered to left to leadoff. Following two groundouts,
Christian Enriquez reached first after being hit and then moved to second on
Colin Cymbalista's single into the gap in left center.
Cole Tabor kept the inning going when he cleared the bases with a three-run home run to straightaway center to make it 4-0 before the inning ended.
After both teams went scoreless in the second, Tarleton State plated three runs on four hits to cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the third.
Tarleton State added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to go up 6-4, but in the seventh, the Cardinals got one of the runs back to make it 6-5.
The Texans in the bottom of the seventh plated 11 runs on six hits with no outs to run-rule UIW 17-5.
Newberry, Cymbalista, and
Kevin Ramos each tallied two hits. Both of Newberry's hits were extra-base (double and home run).
Teammate Tabor led the team in RBIs with three after going 1-for-1 with a home run.
Reliever
Gus McKay took the loss to drop to 1-1 on the season. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits over two and two-thirds innings while striking out three.
UIW is back in action when it travels to Houston to open up conference action this weekend with a three-game series against Houston Christian University. Game one starts on Friday at 6:35 p.m.
