SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Twelve walks propel the University of the Incarnate Word to its fourth straight win and an 8-7 victory over Prairie View A&M to sweep the series. The Cardinals are now 6-2, and the Panthers drop to 3-3 on the season.
With two down and
Jake Weaver on first in the bottom of the first, UIW's
Colin Cymbalista walked to keep the inning alive. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead off Cris Enriquez's RBI single to right, which scored Weaver and sent Cymbalista to third.
Drake Anderson kept things moving with an RBI single of his own, scoring Cymbalista to make it 2-0 before the inning ended.
The Cardinals added a run in the third when Cymbalista walked, then stole second, took third following a fly out, and capped it off by stealing home to make it 3-0.
Prairie View in the top of the sixth was able to plate a run on three hits to cut the lead to 3-1.
With runners on first and second for the Cardinals in the seventh,
Drake Anderson drove in Cymbalista from second off his RBI single to left to push the lead to 4-1. Enriquez went from first to third on the play. Anderson moved up 90 feet as he stole second to put both runners in scoring position with no outs.
Cole Tabor got in on the action when he dropped a single into left to score Enriquez to make it 5-1, which forced Prairie View to go to the bullpen with no outs and two runners on. Anderson later scored off
Justin Rumfield's sac fly to right to push the lead to 6-1 and put runners on the corners.
Following back-to-back outs, Weaver kept the inning going when he recorded his 10
th RBI by driving in Tabor from third and sending
Preston Newberry to third before the inning ended.
Cymbalista in the eighth tallied his second home run of the season with a shot to deep left to make it 8-1.
UIW starting pitcher
EJ Garcia allowed one run on six hits over eight innings of work, while striking out five to earn his first win (1-1) of the season.
Weaver and Anderson paced all Cardinal hitters with two hits each. Weaver finished the game going 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, a double, and a pair of walks, while Anderson was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Cymbalista recorded the team's long ball, going 1-for-2 with a team-high four runs scored and a pair of walks. He also added an RBI.
Enriquez finished with a game-high three walks to go with his 1-for-2 day at the plate. He added an RBI and a run scored.
UIW is on the road Tuesday for its first road game of the season when it travels to Stephenville to face Tarleton State University at 2:05 p.m.
