Cardinals Walk It Off In Extras Over Prairie View

SAN ANTONIO, TexasPreston Newberry's game-winning single in extra innings gives the University of the Incarnate Word a 3-2 win over visiting Prairie View A&M this afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals take the series and improved to 4-2 on the season as PVAM drops to 3-2.

Prairie View struck first to get on the board with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead after its half of the first inning.

UIW in the bottom of the first tallied three straight singles from Jake Weaver, Tony DeJesus, and Colin Cymbalista following a groundout to second. Weaver then scored off a Kevin Ramos sacrifice fly to right center to tie the game at one.

Both teams went scoreless the next two innings until the top of the fourth when Prairie View retook the lead off an RBI groundout to make it 2-1.

The Cardinals could not get much going until the bottom of the seventh, when they loaded the bases with one out, and Trent Rucker drew a four-pitch walk that allowed Newberry to score and tie it at two.

UIW threatened in the bottom of the ninth but left the game-winning run stranded at third as Prairie View was able to get Rucker to pop up to first in foul territory to send the game to extra innings.

Following a 1-2-3 top of the 10th, the Cardinals wasted no time in their half as Cole Tabor drew a walk and then moved to second when Enrico Carrion was hit by the pitch. With two on and no outs, Thomas Lyssy popped up to the catcher for the first out, which now setup a double play attempt for PVAM. With Newberry now at the plate, he dropped a shallow walk-off single into center to score Tabor to give UIW the 3-2 victory.

The Cardinal bullpen allowed three hits, a walk, and no runs over five innings.

Reliever Chase Blease allowed one hit and struck out one over two and a third innings of work to earn his first win (1-0) of the season.

UIW Starting pitcher Hayden Capers allowed two runs on five hits over five innings of work, while striking out six.

Newberry led all Cardinal hitters as he finished the game going 3-for-6 with a run and the game-winning RBI.

Weaver, DeJesus, Cymbalista, Carrion, and Ryder Hernandez each registered a hit.

UIW will go for the series sweep tomorrow against Prairie View. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m.
