SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word extended its winning streak to two games with a 7-2 win over Prairie View A&M University this afternoon at home. The Cardinals move to 4-2 while the Panthers suffer their first loss to fall to 3-1 on the season.
Taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, UIW opened the game up when it plated five runs. Everything started when
Colin Cymbalista and Cris Enriquez had back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners to open the inning. The bases then ended up being full of Cardinals when
Drake Anderson was hit by a pitch. Both Cymbalista and Enriquez later came around to score off of
Cole Tabor's RBI double to push the lead 4-0. Anderson was out at third on the play, but Tabor was able to move up to third following the out.
With one down now, both
Trent Rucker and
Ayden Alsobrooks were hit by pitches to reload the bases. Tabor later scored off of
Kevin Ramos's sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-0. With two down,
Jake Weaver cleared the bases when he tripled home both Rucker and Alsobrooks to make it 7-0 before the inning ended.
Prairie View got on the board in the top of the eighth when it pushed two runs across off a walk and a single to cut the lead to 7-2.
Reliever
Alejandro Vanegas pitched a scoreless inning and a third for UIW, not allowing a runner to reach base to secure the win.
Cardinal starting pitcher
Zac Colletti threw six shutout innings, allowing just four hits, while striking out six to pick up his second win (2-0) of the season.
Cymbalista paced all UIW hitters with two hits (2-for-4), while scoring a pair of runs. Teammate Tabor registered a team-high three RBIs, as he finished the day going 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Weaver finished the game with a triple and two RBIs for the Cardinals. He was also 1 of 6 different players to tally a walk.
The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow with a 2:05 p.m. first pitch for game two of the series with Prairie View.
