Women's Soccer Enters Home Stretch Looking to Lock Up SLC Tournament Spot

SAN ANTONIO -- With just two weeks left in the regular season, the Southland Conference women's soccer standings likely couldn't be more cluttered.

Entering this week, the top seven teams are all within three points of each other.

Fresh off a 1-0 win over the University of the Incarnate Word, Lamar is currently on top with 13 points with a 4-1-1 conference record.

One point back in a four-way tie for second is Houston Christian (3-0-3), UIW (4-2), Northwestern State (4-2) and Nicholls (3-1-1). McNeese (3-1-2) enters the week with 11 points while Southeastern (3-3-1) has 10.

UIW, which can clinch a tournament spot as early as Sunday, is looking to regain its standing atop the conference after last week's loss to Lamar knocked them off.

This will start with a tough road matchup against fellow SLC contender McNeese on Thursday before the Cardinals return home to face UTRGV Sunday afternoon.

McNeese (8-5-2, 3-1-2)

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, 6 p.m., Hammond, La.

ABOUT THE COWBOYS: This matchup will feature two of the conference's top goalies in UIW's Hannah Alexander and McNeese's Shannon Dempsey. Alexander leads the Soutland in saves (68) and saves per-game (4.53), while Dempsey is the leader in save percentage (.885) and shutouts (six). Defense has led the way, as the Cowboys are just seventh in the conference with 21 goals scored. Rhiannon Maynes-Tourond has a team-best five goals while Morgan Fielder leads the squad with four assists.

MATHCUP HISTORY: UIW has a slight 7-6-3 edge in the series all time, thanks largely to winning the last three meetings via shutout. This included a 2-0 win in San Antonio last season, where Alexander had a four-save shutout and Sinead Duffy scored two first-half goals.

UTRGV (4-9-1, 0-5-1)

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, 1 p.m., Gayle and Benson Stadium

ABOUT THE VAQUEROS: Scoring has been very hard to come by for UTRGV, which has scored just three goals in six conference games and enters the week still looking for its first Southland win. Isabella Burtini has been the Vaqueros' top offensive option, recording a team-high six goals and three assists.

MATHCUP HISTORY: UTRGV holds a 5-2-2 all-time advantage, winning each of the last two matches 1-0. The Cardinals' last win was a 2-0 victory in San Antonio on Aug. 24, 2023.
