SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team defeated Houston Christian, 56–52, in a wire-to-wire win Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center. The victory moved the Cardinals to 4–1 in Southland Conference play, marking the best start to conference play in Division I program history.
The Cardinals had two players score in double figures, led by Madison Cockrell's 19 points. Brynn Lusby added 10 points along with three assists, one block, and one steal, while Mallory McQuietor and Jorja Elliott each pulled down a game-high six rebounds.
UIW held a slim two-point edge after the opening quarter, outscoring HCU 14–12. The Cardinals carried a 29–25 lead into halftime after shooting 38.7% from the field in the first half.
The Red and Black extended the margin in the third quarter, outscoring the Huskies 14–8. UIW's defense held HCU to 2-for-12 shooting in the period to build a 43–33 lead entering the fourth.
Houston Christian mounted a late rally, pulling within one twice in the final two minutes. Morgan Borgstadt sealed the win with a three-pointer with 21 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
UIW returns to action Thursday, Jan. 8, traveling to Stephen F. Austin at William R. Johnson Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
