SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team earned a decisive 90–73 victory over Texas A&M–Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center, improving to 10–8 overall and 8–3 in Southland Conference play.
UIW set the tone early, opening the game on a 13–0 run and taking a 29–15 advantage after the first quarter. The Cardinals continued to control the tempo in the second period, extending the lead to as many as 22 points before heading into halftime with a 49–31 cushion.
Madison Cockrell led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting, adding five assists and two steals to pace the Cardinal offense. Jorja Elliott followed with 13 points, five rebounds, and three three-pointers, while Brynn Lusby added 16 points and six rebounds in just over 20 minutes of action. Destiny Whitaker provided a strong spark off the bench, finishing with 11 points, including three triples, as UIW's bench outscored the Islanders 37–28.
The Cardinals pushed the lead to a game-high 23 points midway through the third quarter behind efficient perimeter shooting, finishing the afternoon at 41.2 percent from beyond the arc (14-of-34). Although A&M–Corpus Christi trimmed the margin in the third, UIW responded with a 25-point fourth quarter to put the game away.
UIW forced 24 turnovers and converted them into 24 points, while also holding advantages in fast-break points (10–3) and second-chance scoring (16–6). The Islanders were led by Torie Sevier's 20 points, but never closed the gap to single digits after the opening quarter.
