CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Univeristy of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team dropped a 70–64 road decision to the Texas A&M–Corpus Christi Islanders on Thursday night at the Hilliard Center.
UIW trailed 29–24 at the half before delivering its strongest stretch of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Islanders 26–16 to take a 50–45 advantage heading into the final period. The Cardinals shot 46.7 percent in the third, including four three-pointers, to briefly build an 11-point lead midway through the frame.
Texas A&M–Corpus Christi responded in the fourth, using a 25-point quarter to regain control. The Islanders capitalized at the free-throw line late and held UIW to 14 points in the final 10 minutes to secure the win.
Jorja Elliott led all Cardinals with 24 points and eight rebounds, knocking down seven field goals and going 8-of-10 from the line. Destiny Whitaker added 16 points off the bench, connecting on four triples, while Raimi McCrary contributed eight points and three rebounds.
UIW forced 24 turnovers and scored 19 bench points, but shot 32.2 percent from the field and 24.0 percent from beyond the arc on the night.
The Cardinals move to 10–9 overall and 8–4 in Southland Conference play and will continue conference action in their next outing.
