HOUSTON – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team picked up a key Southland Conference road victory on Thursday evening, defeating Houston Christian 74–65 at Sharp Gymnasium.
UIW was led by a career night from Gwendlyn McGrew, who finished with a game-high 22 points while knocking down six three-pointers. Jorja Elliott added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Madison Williams chipped in 13 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting performance. Madison Cockrell rounded out the Cardinals in double figures with 11 points to go along with six assists and four steals.
The Huskies held a narrow 13–12 advantage after the opening quarter, but the Cardinals responded in the second, shooting 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc to take a 31–24 lead into halftime.
UIW extended its lead in the third quarter behind efficient shooting and defensive pressure, pushing the margin to as many as 15 points midway through the period. Houston Christian mounted a run late in the third to cut the deficit to two, but the Cardinals maintained their composure heading into the final quarter.
The Cardinals closed the game strong, outscoring the Huskies 22–15 in the fourth quarter. UIW used a 16–4 scoring run late in the period to pull away, capitalizing on turnovers and converting at the free-throw line down the stretch.
UIW shot 45.6 percent from the field and an impressive 46.2 percent from three-point range, while holding Houston Christian to 33.3 percent shooting overall. The Cardinals also held a 36–12 advantage in bench points and forced 20 turnovers, converting those into 20 points.
With the win, UIW improves to 9–8 overall and 7–3 in Southland Conference play.
