SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team used a dominant third quarter to pull away from Northwestern State, earning a 66–53 Southland Conference victory Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center. The win marked UIW's 15th consecutive victory over the Lady Demons.
UIW was led by a pair of 20-point performances from Jorja Elliott and Brynn Lusby. Elliott finished with 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting while adding four assists and two steals. Lusby added 20 points off the bench, shooting an efficient 7-of-8 from the field and grabbing eight rebounds.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead, forcing turnovers and converting in transition to take a 17–10 advantage after the opening quarter. Northwestern State responded in the second, outscoring UIW 21–16 to trim the Cardinals' lead to 33–31 at halftime.
UIW seized control coming out of the break, opening the third quarter on a 9–0 run and holding the Lady Demons to just 10 points in the period. The Cardinals shot 47.1 percent from the field in the third while forcing multiple turnovers to extend the lead to 52–41 entering the final frame.
Madison Cockrell chipped in 13 points, four rebounds, and three steals, while Morgan Borgstadt added five points and five rebounds. UIW finished the game with a 36–30 edge in points in the paint and held a 26–11 advantage in bench points.
The Cardinals limited Northwestern State to 36.1 percent shooting from the field and forced 15 turnovers in the win. UIW led for over 37 minutes of game time and never trailed. The Cardinals now turn their attention to the road, traveling to Houston to face Houston Christian in their next Southland Conference matchup.
