SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team earned a 70–63 Southland Conference victory over East Texas A&M on Wednesday evening at the McDermott Center, improving to 5–3 in league play.
UIW was led by Brynn Lusby, who poured in a game-high 19 points off the bench while grabbing eight rebounds. Madison Cockrell added 17 points, four rebounds, and four steals, while Jorja Elliott finished with 10 points and three steals to round out the Cardinals in double figures.
The Lions held a slim 17–14 edge after the opening quarter, but UIW responded in the second, outscoring East Texas A&M 18–15 to head into halftime tied at 32. The Cardinals began to find their rhythm offensively in the third quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field while outscoring the Lions 21–19 to take a 53–51 advantage into the final frame.
UIW pulled away in the fourth quarter behind strong defensive pressure and timely scoring. Elliott knocked down a key three-pointer early in the period, while Lusby and Cockrell combined for crucial baskets down the stretch to seal the win. The Cardinals closed the game by shooting 76.9 percent from the free-throw line and forcing 21 turnovers, which led to 27 points off turnovers.
Morgan Borgstadt chipped in eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Madison Williams added six points and steady defense. UIW also held a 38–34 advantage on the glass and finished with 29 bench points.
The Cardinals return to Southland Conference action later this week as they continue their homestand at the McDermott Center.
