LUBBOCK – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team participated in the Red Raider Classic over the weekend. On Friday, the Cardinals faced the University of Mississippi and the University at Albany. On Saturday, the Red and Black competed against Texas Tech University.   

Match 1: OLEMISS (3), UIW (0)  

Set 1: UIW 22 (0), OLEMISS 25 (1)       

The Cardinals and Rebels played a close first set with neither team leading by more than three points. After Ole Miss fell behind 18-17, the Rebels went on a 4-0 run to retake the lead. The Rebels never gave the lead back to take a 1-0 lead.   

Set 2: UIW 21 (0), OLEMISS 25 (2)      

Set two was much like set one, with the largest lead being four points in favor of the Rebels. After UIW pulled within one, 22-21 Ole Miss closed out the set on a 3-0 run to shut the door and take a 2-0 lead.  

Set 3: UIW 17 (0), OLEMISS 25 (3) 

After the Cardinals pulled within three, 18-15, the Rebels used 5-0 run to put the match out of reach.    

Kyla Malone and Kitana Tu'ufuli led the Cardinals in kills with ten. Calissa Allison finished with a team-leading 17 assists. Ashton Rogers led UIW in digs with 13, and Vanessa Eregie led the Red and Black in blocks with four.  

Match 2: UALBANY (0), UIW (3)   

Set 1: UIW 14 (1), UALBANY 25 (1)       

After playing to an 8-8 tie, the Cardinals used a 5-0 run to take the lead. UIW would use two 3-0 runs and a 4-0 run to close out the set and take a 1-0 lead.  

Set 2: UIW 25 (2), UALBANY 17 (1)      

UIW jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to kick off set two. The Red and Black never trailed as they used a pair of 4-0 runs to take the set.  

Set 3: UIW 25 (3), UALBANY 21 (1)      

The Cardinals found themselves down 11-5 to open up set three. An 8-0 Cardinal run brought them to match point and Tu'ufuli ended the match with a kill. 

Allison recorded a triple-double with 12 kills, 18 assists and 12 digs. K. Thomas finished with a match-leading four blocks. Victoria Hall and Rogers finished with match highs in assists (19) and digs (23), respectively. 

Match 3: UIW (2) TTU (3)    

Set 1: UIW 25 (1), TTU 14 (0)   

The Cardinals completely dominated the Red Raiders, jumping out to a 9-3 lead. UIW's largest lead reached nine before they finished set one on a 4-0 run to take a 1-0 lead.  

Set 2: UIW 25 (2), TTU 17 (0)       

Much like set one, the Red and Black thoroughly dominated the home team, jumping out to an early 10-5 lead. The Cardinals used a late 5-0 run to pull away and take a commanding 2-0 lead.  

Set 3: UIW 12 (2), TTU 25 (1)       

After falling behind 3-2, the Red Raiders took control and never trailed for the remainder of the set. TTU used a 6-0 run late in the set to take set three. 

Set 4: UIW 21 (2), TTU 25 (2)       

After trailing 2-1, the home side took control and never trailed for the remainder of the set. The Red Raiders used a 4-0 run to force a winner-take-all fifth set. 

Set 5: UIW 14 (2), TTU 16 (3)       

After trailing 13-7, the Cardinals went on a 6-0 run to tie things up at 13-13. After Finley Evans tied the match up at 14-14 the Red Raiders secured the final two points to take the win. 

Tu'ufuli set a new season high in kills with 16. Eregie tied her career high in blocks with six. Rogers recorded a team-high 14 digs, and Allison led all players in assists with 28. 

UIW kicks off conference play on the road this upcoming week. The Cardinals will travel to Natchitoches, LA, to take on the Demons on Thursday. UIW will then visit ETAMU on Saturday to close out the week.
