SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's and women's cross country teams competed in the UIW Invitational meet on Friday night at the Windcrest Golf Club. The men's team won, while the women were third behind the University of Texas and UTRGV. All results can be found here.
The men's team dominated the field, placing five in the top ten. Eric Pineda led the way for the Cardinals, finishing in fourth with a 19:32 time. Ethan Malesich (19:46) and Bryan Mileski (19:51) finished right behind him in sixth and seventh, respectively. James Butler (19:58) and Jared Laverty (19:58) rounded out the top ten.
"It was nice for the men to have an SEC team in UT to race against on the home course and give us an opportunity to measure up against a great team," said head coach Dr. Derek Riedel. "Last year, we nearly perfectly scored the meet, and knew this year, we would have to race smart and be aggressive to be successful. I'm proud of the guys for racing smart, with many of the guys' negative splitting on a soggy course. Kudos to Eric Pineda for his big PR."
Freshman Stoya Laydevant (18:34) led the way for the women's side for the Red and Black as she finished thirteenth. Vera Maisaje (18:42) finished right behind her in fifteenth. Oceane Cercueil (18:46) and Emily Torres (18:58) rounded out the top 20, finishing seventeenth and twentieth, respectively.
"I'm proud of the women for making nice progress this week as they moved up to the 5k distance, said Riedel. "They were able to keep their 1-5 time gap the same as two weeks ago, even though they moved up from 4-5K. Stoya did a nice job taking out the race and running as an aggressive #1 for us, and I think Zanashia had a good race."
The Cardinals will return on September 26th at the Cowboy Jamboree. The meet will take place in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
